PRESS RELEASE
The REF TEK system is part of a Seismic Microzonation project in the cities of Caracas and Barquisimeto. The Microzonation project was conducted under international tender, and REF TEK was the only manufacturer to meet or exceed the tender technical specifications as well as provide a cost-effective solution.
The system includes five REF TEK 130-MC/12A Multi-channel Accelerographs (12-channels each), four REF TEK 130-SM Accelerographs, REF TEK 131A-02/3 Triaxial surface and 131A-02/BH Borehole Accelerometers, software for command/control, real-time data display, interactive waveform viewing, local and remote communication, and comprehensive strong motion data processing.
Each REF TEK 130-MC/12A collects data from one surface and two borehole accelerometers installed at depths from 50 to 275 meters. Each REF TEK 131A-02/BH Accelerometer is equipped with a triaxial MEMS Accelerometer, internal compass and clamping mechanism for fixed accelerometer installation at different depths. Four REF TEK 130-SM 3-channel Accelerographs are deployed in high-rise buildings in four separate cities.
FUNVISIS is responsible for research in seismology, geological sciences and seismic engineering for hazard mitigation. The REF TEK System installed for the Seismic Microzonation project allows FUNVISIS to define and study site response along with acceleration parameters (peak acceleration, spectra response, etc.) caused by earthquakes.
Data is acquired and processed by the Geographical Information System (GIS) and distributed to Civil Defense, Firefighters, City Mayors, State Governors, Police Departments, Hospitals, etc. for urban planning and emergency response.
The Seismic Microzonation Project of Caracas and Barquisimeto is led by FUNVISIS with other institutions such as CENAMB-UCV and UCLA. Information from the studies will also be applied to a complementary regional Seismo-Resistant Construction set to Regulations COVENIN 1756-2001.
